HAIR LOSS TREATMENTS
Explained by Cosmetic Physician Dr Buddy Beaini
Hair Loss is one of the biggest indications of ageing and it’s also one of the most common.
Up to 40 per cent of men aged 35 or over complain of losing hair, with this figure increasing to 55 per cent in men aged 60 and older and 65 per cent of women in the same age group.
But while the magic potion to stop hair falling out in the first place is yet to be invented, modern technology is making it easier than ever to strengthen hair and even help grow it back in many individuals.
One treatment making waves is platelet-rich plasma (PRP) hair loss treatments, which uses patients own blood plasma to stimulate the stem cells and growth factors in the hair follicles, and promote new hair growth. Dr Buddy Beaini, director of MD Cosmedical Solutions Hair Loss Clinics, walks us through the new treatment:
WHAT CAUSES HAIR LOSS?
In the vast majority of cases, genetics are the greatest determinant of hair loss, but other factors can include arthritis, heart and blood pressure medications, hormonal problems, hormone medication, cancer treatment, illness and stress. For women, the contraceptive pill, thyroid problems and hormonal changes such as pregnancy, childbirth and menopause can also contribute. Alopecia areata is an auto-immune condition where the immune system mistakenly attacks the hair follicles, causing patches of hair loss.
HOW CAN HAIR LOSS BE TREATED?
Depending on the cause, treatments can include anything from switching to a healthier diet, scalp massage and exercise to a blood test to rule out underlying causes such as illness, anaemia, iron deficiency and thyroid problems. Topical ointments such as Minoxidil can help, but approach hair transplant treatments at your own risk, Dr Beaini says. “They’re very expensive, they may not work and often they can look really, really bad,” he says.
WHAT IS PLATELET-RICH PLASMA (PRP) HAIR LOSS TREATMENT?
HOW MANY PRP TREATMENTS ARE NEEDED?
Depending on severity, most people require a course of three to six treatments administered every two to four weeks. “It works best for people who are losing their hair; men in their 30s to 50s and women in their 50s or 60s whose hair is starting to thin or have recently lost hair,” Dr Buddy Beaini says.
Discomfort is minimal and apart from some scalp redness, swelling and tenderness, which usually subside after 24 hours, most patients return to work the next day. You should expect to see some healthier new hair growth after the second or third session, he says. “Results can be permanent, but if it’s hereditary, we recommend top-ups every year.”
