The History & Advancement of Revolutionary Aptos Threads By Dr Buddy Paul Beaini
For almost three decades, Aptos has helped shape the evolution of minimally invasive thread lifting. Developed by plastic surgeon Dr Marlen Sulamanidze and subsequently advanced with Dr George Sulamanidze and Dr Konstantin Sulamanidze, Aptos combines specialised thread designs, carefully planned vectors and practitioner technique to reposition selected soft tissues and support facial contouring without conventional facelift surgery.
At MD Cosmedical Solutions, Aptos thread-lifting treatments are performed by Dr Buddy Beaini, who has extensive experience in face, neck and brow thread lifting. Consultations are available in Wahroonga, near Hornsby, Sydney CBD and Canberra.
From a Surgical Idea to a Global Thread-Lifting System
1996: the beginning of the Aptos method
The Aptos story began in 1996, when Dr Marlen Sulamanidze developed early barbed thread concepts intended to support and reposition soft tissue. The name APTOS is derived from “anti-ptosis” — a reference to countering tissue descent. This work helped establish a new category between non-invasive skin treatments and traditional surgical lifting.
A family-led program of continuing innovation
The Sulamanidze family continued to refine thread configurations, insertion methods and anatomical treatment strategies. Dr George and Dr Konstantin Sulamanidze contributed to the ongoing development and international education of Aptos methods, helping the system expand into a broad portfolio for different facial areas and clinical objectives.
The move toward absorbable, tissue-supporting materials
Aptos later introduced absorbable threads made from poly-L-lactic acid and caprolactone, commonly described as P(LA/CL). In 2018, Aptos presented a third-generation formulation incorporating hyaluronic acid. These materials are designed to provide mechanical support while the thread gradually absorbs, with the treatment also intended to stimulate a local tissue response. The appropriate product and method depend on the patient’s anatomy, skin quality and treatment goals.
An Award-Winning International Brand
Aptos has received repeated recognition at international aesthetic medicine events. Documented honours include:
Best Tightening Threads 2016–2017 at the Anti-Aging & Beauty Trophy / AMEC.
Best Tightening Thread 2017–2018 at AMEC Live Visage.
Best Tightening Thread 2018–2019 — the brand’s third consecutive win in that category.
Pearl of Dermatology recognition in Poland, including awards associated with Aptos lifting products and methods.
These accolades help explain why Aptos is widely regarded as one of the world’s best-known and most awarded specialist thread-lifting systems. No award, however, can replace appropriate patient selection, anatomical knowledge, sterile technique and the experience of the treating doctor.
What Makes Aptos Threads Distinctive?
Purpose-designed barbs and configurations intended to engage tissue and support repositioning along planned vectors.
A broad range of thread types and methods, allowing treatment to be individualised rather than relying on one standard pattern.
Absorbable P(LA/CL)-based options, including selected Aptos products formulated with hyaluronic acid.
A long development history supported by international practitioner training and published clinical literature.
Treatment planning that can address selected areas of the cheeks, jawline, neck and brow, where clinically appropriate.
The thread itself is only one part of the result. The doctor must assess facial proportions, tissue weight, asymmetry, skin quality and the direction of age-related descent before selecting the product, entry points, depth and vectors.
Dr Buddy Beaini: Australian Experience and Leadership in Thread Lifting
Dr Buddy Beaini was the first Australian doctor to travel to Tbilisi, Georgia, for training with Aptos founders and inventors Dr Marlen Sulamanidze, Dr George Sulamanidze and Dr Konstantin Sulamanidze. This direct training provided early access to the philosophy, anatomy and technical principles behind the Aptos methods.
Across approximately 15 years of thread-lifting practice, Dr Beaini has performed more than 7,000 face, neck and brow thread-lift procedures, according to MD Cosmedical Solutions’ treatment records. This depth of experience has made him a prominent Australian practitioner and educator in thread lifting, with a particular focus on tailored vector planning and natural-looking facial balance.
Every face is different. Dr Beaini’s approach begins with a medical consultation to determine whether threads are suitable, which areas may reasonably benefit and whether another treatment — or surgery — may be more appropriate.
What Can an Aptos Thread Lift Address?
For appropriately selected patients, an Aptos thread lift may be considered for:
- mild to moderate descent of the cheeks or lower face
- reduced jawline definition or early jowling
- selected neck laxity
- brow positioning or facial asymmetry, when anatomically suitable
- patients seeking a minimally invasive option with less recovery than facelift surgery.
Thread lifting is not equivalent to a surgical facelift and cannot reproduce the degree of tissue removal or repositioning achieved by surgery. Results vary according to anatomy, age, skin quality, lifestyle, the technique used and the body’s healing response.
Consultation, Treatment and Recovery
A consultation includes medical history, examination, discussion of goals and explanation of alternatives, risks, expected recovery and likely limitations. Treatment is generally performed using local anaesthesia. Temporary swelling, bruising, tenderness, dimpling, tightness or asymmetry may occur during early healing. Less common but important risks include infection, thread visibility or palpability, extrusion, nerve or vessel injury, persistent contour irregularity and the need for corrective treatment.
Patients receive individual aftercare instructions. Recovery and return to normal activities vary, and the final result should be assessed after tissues have settled.
